I have always been athletic, but I started working out with
weights about 10 years ago. I became a nationally certified personal trainer
9 years ago and worked in a gym for 2 years, while I started a Masters
degree. I joined the fire department in 1997. In 2000 I entered into a
supernatural body building show and won overall women's division.
In 2001 the fire department asked me to be the health and wellness coordinator.
I have been in the training division since then. We perform fitness assessments
on fire fighters as well as offer health, wellness, and fitness classes
every year in the fire stations. This year, I am teaching a fitness class
to fire fighters in the station to provide them with a means to getting
in shape without any equipment.
I am trying to teach fire fighters that they need to stay in good physical
condition, not only to assist the community, but in order to prevent early
death from stress related heart attacks. I have certified 18 peer trainers
to assist with the program. I produce a monthly newsletter in addition
to scheduling medical physicals for certified personnel and providing
physical agility tests to new hires.
My fitness goals are to be in excellent physical condition so that I can,
not only be a model to other fire fighters, but perform the job to the
best of my ability to serve the community. I love to run my dogs, I workout
with weights, I mountain bike and road bike. In the winters I take spin
classes, in the summers, I water ski.
I try to eat healthy with a combination of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates,
fruits, and vegetables. Although I used to take a bunch of supplements,
I only take a multivitamin right now. I am about to finish my Masters
degree and am ready for another challenge!
One of our Battalion Chiefs initiated a Combat Challenge team this year
and I am assisting with getting that started. We have had one team meeting
so far and I am thinking about participating in the team. I would like
to thank Juliet Draper for being a model for other female fire fighters.

I have been with the fire department for over 21 years of which I have
been training recruits physically for the past 15 years. We have balanced
program of running and lifting for the recruits while they are in school
and I believe that by hard work and God's blessings, I am still able to
run and lift with the best of the recurits coming in. One of my goals
is to still be able to do the above until I retire.
We all know that fighting fire is very demanding and by
lifting and running on a regular basis I am better equiped to handle the
stresses that is placed upon the body when fighting fire or responding
to other calls.
As for my dietary habits I am a big believer in Bill Phillips
"Body For LIfe" program. I eat five or six meals a day. Each
meal consists of approximately 300-400 calories. I try to eat about 40%
carbs, 40% protien and 20% fat. I drink about 1 gallon of water per day.
I take glutamine and the following vitamins each day: multi, B-complex,
C 500 mg 3 times per day, A and E, Lycopene, Omega 3, each day. I also
take Glucosamine and Chondroitin each day.

My achievements thus far have been self impressive on the personal level.
I have been able to fulfil my goal of becoming a Firefighter after 20yrs
experience as a Paramedic. Obtaining my IFA Fitness certification to assist
the department in it's Health & Welness program and assisting at the
Fire Training Academy with the new recruits. As my career continues and
I continue with my training and education, all efforts will present with
benefits.
My Fitness Goals: As a personal training not only for
the fire department but also for Golds Gym I'm able to see my training
at work not only personally but for others. To continue my training in
strength and cardio.
I just completed my first FireFighter Combat Challenge in Deerfield Beach,
Fl. and had a great time meeting others and participating. My goal is
to make it to the World Championship. So my training has increased and
techniques structured.
Sport/Training keeping Fit: My ability to continue my
sports/training allows strenght & endurance & flexability which
will help me maintain a long career in the fire service. Plus it's fun.
Dietary habits: I maintain a structured diet, due to training
for the Combat Challenge, It's a high protein diet, with supplements Cell
Tech / Nitro Tech combination. Green veggies, little to no carbs. Fish,
Brown Rice, Egg whites, peanuts, Lots of water.
The above is just a little of who I am and what I do,
as each individual is different what may work for one person may not work
for the other. Meet your own goal. In the end, it's all about you.
