For many years I competed in drug-free powerlifting with best official lifts of Squat-650, Bench Press-505, Deadlift-688. Though I stopped competing in powerlifting, I began entering strongman competitions several years ago-winning my division in the 2000 Bob Hoffman Strongman Challenge. Today I train primarily for strength and conditioning-I work out 6 days per week-I lift 3 days ( M-W-F), and do cardio work-namely 30 minutes on the Stairmaster-on the the other 3 days (T-TH-Sat.) The lifts I focus on are Squats, Incline Press, Seated DB Press. Deadlift, Weighted Chin-ups, Bent-over Rows, and Sit-ups. I train for overall strength- I do NOT train for a "pump," or for "cuts," and I have always favored heavy movements instead of isolation exercises. This type of training has helped me prepare for various competitions I have entered, it has also helped me maintain functional strength to withstand the rigors of firefighting. The thrice weekly cardio sessions helps maintain my aerobic fitness, which, I believe, is crucial for firefighters. I try to maintain a sensible diet-everything in moderation. I try to limit high-fat foods, and foods that contain refined sugar. Although I used to use a protein powder supplement in the past, I currently take only a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, and an anti-oxidant.

My fastest 10k is 31:40, my fastest combat challenge is 1:38. My goal is to lose some weight and be the best person I can be. My running helps me with my breathing as a firefighter and it keeps me feeling younger for my family. I am just starting out with a new diet plan to help me lose some weight and give me some more energy, I don't take any supplements as of yet.

Well my training is because of my involvement in the FD. In 1993 a FD physical said I was a little overweight and while dieting I found the Challenge. I have been competing ever since including the last 3 World Challenges. My fastest 12 times have all come since I turned 50 in 2001. Guess that means that we dont have to slow down cause we are getting older
